Lenny Eiger is a photographer's photographer, an accomplished fine artist and master printer. His work exhibits excellence in the craftsmanship of photography, and communicates the soul of his subjects.

Eiger believes photography ought to be about humanity, that ultimately it is the depth of your relationship to your subject that is your expression, not just the image itself. His photographs are layered with a sense of time and place, intimacy and integrity.

His process begins with a trip outdoors to explore nature armed with a large format camera, either 4x5 or 8x10, and black and white film. "Of course, it isn't enough that one just drives to the natural wonder of one's choice. Anyone with a camera can create a photograph of what something looks like - sunsets happen every day. Creating a photograph of what something feels like is a different challenge. Photographing the outside is not enough, it is photographing the inside that matters."

"You need to connect with your subject. To do so you have to be present on more than a physical level. If one is succeessful then is it possible to bring some real magic back. The image can then become a small generator of its own magic on the wall, effecting changes in anyone who takes the time to take it in. It has the capacity to teach you something about yourself."

Art and Photography has always been a part of his life. Lenny Eiger is a second generation photographer. Conrad Eiger, his father, was a successful commercial photographer with work for Life magazine, Town and Country, 100 album covers for CBS Music including Benny Goodman. HIs mother, Phyllis, is an accomplished painter and printmaker, who had her photographic beginnings in the Black Star photo agency, covering soldiers returning from WWII

Early in his career Eiger learned from his college mentor Phil Perkis that it is the wisdom you have to share that makes any work of art meaningful. This resonated with Eiger, who spent his high school years in the alternate culture of Puerto Rico, where the warmth, hospitality and generosity of spirit was in contrast to his earlier years in New York City. This desire to share his feelings and passions gives an intensity to his art and inspired him to become an educator.

He has an MFA from Pratt Institute in New York City, and ten years experience teaching college at Parsons School of Design, The Cooper Union, and the New School in New York City, as well as the Academy of Art in San Francisco, where he taught Large Format, Platinum and other Non-Silver Processes, Photochemistry and the History of Photography. He has also taught workshops at Cone Editions Press in Vermont. For many years, he has been known as a top photographic printer - he was, in fact, one of the handful of artists who resurrected the platinum printing process in the 1970's. He has printed for many photographers, including Richard Avedon.

Currently he lives in Petaluma with his wife Vairagya and daughter Lena, where he operates EigerStudios, a museum quality digital fine art printing and scanning studio. They scan and print for other photographers and do fine art reproductions with their 8,000 dpi Aztek Premier Drum Scanner, a large format printer dedicated to black and white printing, and a 54" 12 color Roland D'Vinci System.
